Napoleonic Era Prussian M1715/1786M Infantry Hanger Saber - Vintage Sword
This is a Napoleonic era Prussian M1715/1786M infantry hanger saber. It features a 25.5" blade, total length of 31.5", solid brass handle and guard and features the "FWR" royal cypher of Frederick William III. The top of the guard is marked ""1 Y. 1.6" which is the order number found on all examples of this sword, the knucklebow is marked "4 No. 351 28 L R" which most likely indicates that this was weapon number 351 issued to the the 28th Landwehr Regiment. It is not out of the realm of possibility that this sword saw use at Waterloo. At Waterloo, the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot was a key British infantry unit in Kemp's Brigade, fighting fiercely at Quatre Bras and on the main battlefield, forming squares under cavalry attack and charging with cavalry, proving their discipline and earning praise, despite significant confusion and losses in the chaotic final stages of the battle. They famously rallied with the cry "28th remember Egypt" during a desperate defense against French cavalry near Gémioncourt. We will probably never know if this sword was carried at Waterloo but it is certainly a fascinating piece of military history. Overall condition is good with the original edge, there is some tarnishing to the blade and spots of corrosion however considering it is over 200 years old is it is in very nice shape! There is no scabbard included with this sword. Buy online today!
